The Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) is federally sponsored program designed to recruit and assist disadvantaged students, beginning with the Junior High School level through the college associate degree level, to "learn and achieve success" in a health care career. For more information on this program, please click here.

Although HCOP is focused on disadvantaged youth, CHEC has developed many similar programs to encourage all youth to explore health careers. These programs include health care and technology exploratory activities such as tours, summer camps, guest speakers, shadowing experiences, health career seminars, etc.

The Crossroads Health Education Center (CHEC), formally knows as Crossroads AHEC, is committed to improving access to health care in under-served communities through the promotion of primary care options and educational opportunities.

The mission of CHEC is "Improving access to health care through education." Since being organized in April, 2000, CHEC has established a reputation for dedication to the rural and urban under-served communities it serves with programs designed to eliminate the shortages of health care professions and meet health care needs.

CHEC provides health education activities and services to 13 school districts in rural and urban under-served areas. More than 2000,000 students in 51 public high schools, regardless of ethnic or economic background, are offered opportunities to learn about and achieve success in health care careers. CHEC has also provided rural and urban under-served training opportunities to post-graduate students including physical assistants, occupational therapists, nurse practitioners, medical students, and more. These training opportunities allow students to experience the challenges and rewards of practicing in under-served communities. Clinical rotations are often scheduled in Community Health Centers where Students must be proficient in Spanish.
