The Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) is federally sponsored program designed to recruit and assist disadvantaged students, beginning with the Junior High School level through the college associate degree level, to "learn and achieve success" in a health care career.

Tremendous opportunities exist for trained health care professionals to fill high demand and well paying jobs within Utah and the rest of the United States. The Crossroads Center and our many partners are committed to sharing these opportunities with disadvantaged students within the Salt Lake City area, and providing specialized assistance to making career dreams possible.

If you are disadvantaged student and are considering a career in Medicine, Pharmacy, dentistry, Radiology Technology, Laboratory, or many other exiting allied health careers, the Health Careers Opportunity Project can give you assistance and direction to help you realize your goals.

SERVICES OFFERED BY HCOP

The HCOP Partnership has developed a "pipeline" of services that will be offered to students that will include four primary components:

1) HCOP Student Recruitment
Assure a more competitive applicant pool by recruiting disadvantaged students into the HCOP Preparatory programs. Recruitment activities build awareness of health career opportunities through dissemination of career information and hands-on activities.

2) HCOP Student Preparation for Post-Secondary Health Professions Programs
Facilitate the entry of disadvantaged students into post-secondary health professions programs. Preparation activities motivate students through exploratory hands-on activities and furnish academic course work to prepare students for health profession post-secondary programs.

  • High School Medical Anatomy and Physiology (MAP) Program - Offered after school and during the summer
  • High School Medical Technician Preparation Program - Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) Certification

3)HCOP Student Retention
Assist HCOP post-secondary students with obtaining the personal and financial resources necessary to complete an associate degree in a health professions area. Retention activities help students overcome personal and financial challenges on their road to success.

4)HCOP Cultural Competence Development
Assist HCOP health professions students and current health professionals develop a greater ability to provide quality health care services to diverse patients.

THE ULTIMATE GOAL: A COLLEGE DEGREE & CAREER SUCCESS

It is the intention of the HCOP partners to assist as many students as possible to achieve a foundation of success and stability within a college degree program and realize their potential to excel even further. Special emphasis will be given to the completion of in-demand associate degree programs in the following areas:

  • Radiologic Technology
  • Biotechnology Technician
  • Medical Laboratory Technician
  • Physical Therapy Assistant
  • Occupational Therapy Assistant
  • Fitness Technician
  • Dental Hygiene
  • Health Sciences.

These associate degree programs will not only provide disadvantaged students a strong health related foundation, experience, and valuable job skills, but a platform for continued educational and career success.


QUALIFICATIONS FOR HCOP PARTICIPATION

Students who meet one of the following criteria will meet the definition of "disadvantage" and will be encouraged to participate in HCOP activities:

  1. Economically Disadvantaged Students - Low-income students are qualified for services. 41% of the students within the schools targeted by HCOP receive free or reduced lunch, a primary indicator of the economically disadvantaged status of the students.
  2. Culturally Disadvantaged Students - Racial and ethnic minority students are qualified for services. 34% of all students within targeted schools are racial or ethnic minorities. Limited English Proficiency (LEP) rates reflect this diverse student population with 25% reporting as LEP at the HCOP targeted schools. Students who are homeless or in foster care, or students who are pregnant or parenting also qualify.
  3. Educationally Disadvantaged Students - Students who do not have a parent /guardian who has completed at least an associate's degree are qualified for services. Students who have a GPA that is equivalent to a C or below may also qualify.

WHAT CAN I DO FOR HCOP?
The HCOP partnership encourage all school faculty and staff to identify and refer HCOP-qualified students to your district HCOP representative. Other ways you can assist us in promoting the program:

  • Distribute HCOP brochures to students interested in health care fields.
  • Encourage HCOP-qualified students to pursue a health care career and enroll in the Health Science and Technology courses offered in the district.
  • Invite your district HCOP representative to SEOP consultations and career days.
  • Assist in facilitating and advertising HCOP activities (field trips, guest speakers, summer programs, ACT prep seminars).
  • Contact your district representative to arrange for classroom presentations (hands-on activities and guest speakers).
  • Encourage HCOP Seniors take advantage of the mentor program, college success seminar, and financial aid workshops at Salt Lake Community College.
