The Crossroads Health Education Center Youth Program accomplishes the mission of increasing access to health care by helping youth from rural and urban under-served communities become practicing health professionals.  This is accomplished through recruitment and retention activities and services that are designed to bring interest to and preparation to students for success in post-secondary health care and health technology education program.

CHEC provides activities and services that expose youth to health care and health technology career opportunities and increases their awareness of the educational preparation and life skills necessary to be successful in health professions careers. CHEC also provides activities and services that help youth select, prepare for, and successfully transition into post-secondary health professions programs upon graduation from high school.

CROSSROADS CENTER SUMMER CAMPS
Summer camps have been a highlight of the CHEC Youth Program. Involving high school students from a variety of schools, backgrounds, and cultures, the summer camps are designed with three purposes in mind: 1) Introduce students to careers in health care; 2) Teach health care concepts and skills through hands on activities such as CPR training and organ dissections; 3) Galvanize students commitment to perusing additional education and training in health sciences.

CHEC has sponsored different camps of various length and emphasis. These camps included:

  • Summer Academic Enrichment Program - Students interested in becoming health care professionals participate in a 120-hour program to enhance their mathematics and language arts skills in an effort to increase their success in post-secondary health science programs.
  • Introduction to Health Sciences Program - Provide students with basic anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology they will need to enter health science certificate programs such as Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, etc. The 90-hour program offered students the opportunity to explore the health care careers that are available in their community. CPR certification is offered to all students taking the course.
  • Health Science Summer Camp Program - Students spend two days learning about health care career options by listening to health care professionals, taking tours of hospital departments, and participating in dissections and other health care related activities.

STUDENT DISSECTION ACTIVITIES
In an effort to generate and solidify interest among jr. high and high school students in health care careers, CHEC has been sponsoring heart, eyeball, and chicken wing dissections (and an occasional lung). Dissection activities allow students to roll up their sleeves and learn hands-on about how the heart functions, what an eyeball is composed of, how muscles contract, and how delicate our lungs are.

HEALTH CAREER EXPLORATION PROGRAMS
CHEC can provide more extensive programs designed to meet the specific needs of students. Often with sponsorship from local businesses and organization through small grants, CHEC can develop a curriculum that will award students school work-based learning credits. These programs are designed to help students gain a broad understanding concerning all health care and health technology careers through hands-on activities, tours, and visits from guest speakers. In addition, students can be given the opportunity to develop a foundation of medical anatomy and physiology concepts that will help them pursue their career.

"A DAY WITH HEALTH PROFESSIONALS" PROGRAM
Designed for participation from high school career counselors, the "Day with Health Professionals" is intended to expand counselors' knowledge of various health care careers that are high in demand. During the day-long seminar, experienced health care professionals representing many different specialties speak about their careers and share detailed information about working conditions, educational requirements, and their personal experience in their chosen profession.

All speakers are asked to share why they choose their field, what steps they took to become a practicing professional, the average salary, and the career outlook. Handouts include a fact sheet on each career and other helpful materials.
