Names of God: Part One

HIS PERSONAL NAME

Exodus 3:13-15(ESV) — ¹³“Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the children of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”¹⁴And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”¹⁵God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and this I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

Devotional — When you’re in a new group of people, you’re often asked to tell a bit about yourself, to give an introduction. The God of the universe wants to be known as well. The entire Bible tells us who He is; shows us His character. He shows us He is constant, never changing. He is the One who makes covenant promises with his people and keeps them.  Exodus 3 is a good starting place.  He says “tell them I AM who I AM. In the Hebrew, this phrase means “to exist, to be”.  Here God tells us that He has existed, is existing and will forever exist. Isn’t it good to know that God has been, is, and will forever be. He didn’t just pop up and say “I’M  here.” Also, he won’t disappear when something new catches his fancy. This should be a comfort to us in a world that’s constantly changing and deciding which face it wants to show at any given time. I AM who I AM—constant, steadfast, secure in His character and promises.

Prayer — Give thanks for an eternal God who remains constant and never changes. Rejoice in that we can come to know His character and rely on it.
