Names of Jesus: Part Nine

Jesus—The Bread of Life
John 6:35 (NASB) — “Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; the one who comes to Me will not be hungry, and the one who believes in Me will never be thirsty.”
John 6:51 (NASB) — “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats from this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I will give for the life of the world also is My flesh.”
Devotion — Whether we understand it or not, we all have a hunger for something. We instinctively know there is an emptiness in our lives, and we search for the thing(s) we think will fill that longing in our soul. Without a saving knowledge of Christ, we’ll chase after all kinds of things. Some good, some not so good. But ultimately, I’ve found things of the world don’t fill that void. However, when we come to know Jesus, make Him Lord of our lives, and seek Him, we find that emptiness being filled. And the more we partake of Jesus, consuming His Word, and living in relationship to Him, the less and less our spirit hungers. That’s because He is the Bread of Life, come down from Heaven. He feeds, nourishes, and sustains us through Scripture, through His abiding presence, and through His work in our lives. He strengthens and empowers us to live in this world, do His work, and be His witnesses.
Prayer — If you’re longing for something that always seems beyond your grasp, look to Jesus. He has what you’re searching for. Surrender your life, your heart, your soul, your spirit to Him. Let the Bread of Life feed and nourish you. Let us all give thanks and praise to the Sustainer of our lives and for the Bread that came down from Heaven.
