Names of Jesus: Part Five

Jesus—The Lamb of God/Savior/Redeemer

John 1:29 (NASB) — “The next day he (John the Baptist) saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

John 3:16-18 (NASB) — “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Luke 2:10-11(NASB) — “And so the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

Rev. 5:6 (NASB) — “And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slaughtered, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.”

Devotional — Since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, man has been separated from a holy God because of disobedience or sin. Jesus Christ's mission is to reconcile humanity to God through His sacrificial death and resurrection. In spiritual currency, forgiveness of sin requires a blood sacrifice of a perfect, or unblemished, animal. We see this throughout the Old Testament as part of the tabernacle system.  However, God the Father had a more perfect plan for the redemption of mankind from the beginning.  He sent his Son, Jesus, to provide that perfect, sinless sacrifice through the shedding of his own blood to pay the price for our sins. Christ’s sacrifice covers our sin and restores us to that perfect relationship God intended from the beginning. When we confess our sin and turn from evil, Christ’s atoning blood brings us into the family of God for all eternity.

Prayer — Let’s give great thanks to Jesus Christ for His willingness to go to the cross for our redemption. That through his death and resurrection, we have been redeemed, restored, and united with Him for all eternity to come. Hallelujah!
